If you have a child with mental illness or special needs, keeping your marriage alive and healthy is one of the hardest things imaginable. The children respond differently to the mother and to the father; the father usually is out working all day, they come home and they just like, yeah it’s just a normal appropriate behavior, don’t worry about it, they will outgrew it, saying I’ll live through this, you don’t know what’s going on, and then when the father finally gets involved in it, it’s like, oh my God, I’m sorry you've been going through all this I had no idea, coming to that realization is really difficult. It puts a lot of stress in a marriage, working it through just takes conversation, you got to listen to one another, you got to really feel what the other one is going through and you need to seek outside help, without it, the whole family is destined for doom and you don’t want that. You got to be there for one another, so you have to be there for your child, you have to fight for your child, your marriage is certainly worth fighting for, isn't it?

Dad

Jay Gaylen is the dad of a now 22-year old daughter who was diagnosed as a teen with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Bi-Polar II and ADHD. Jay and his wife, Renu, adopted Joslyn from Thailand. The process started when Joslyn was just nine months old. It took nearly two years to complete the adoption process — a good reason why Joslyn is a RAD kid. They sought help from numerous resources before discovering NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Jay began lecturing for NAMI’s Parents and Teachers as Allies program while being trained to teach the Family to Family and Basics courses.
