My first son was born in 2005. The cost of my homebirth at the time was about $3500. That included the monthly prenatal visits, the birth, as well as some aftercare, kind of wellness visits for myself and the baby. Now, as far as insurance companies are concerned, every insurance company is different. I petitioned our insurance company at the time to cover the cost, mostly because it was probably less than half of an average hospital birth. They agreed, which I was very fortunate. At the time, you know, I probably could have paid it out of pocket. But it’s definitely something that I think parents who are interested in homebirth should investigate ahead of time with your insurance company. The other thing is homebirth is so much more cost effective. If you go into a hospital, you’re likely to have so many more interventions. You can use that as your argument, I think, with your insurance company when you’re presenting it.
